BC Spring Birds. Loons are calling you!

Nature has an incredible way of captivating our senses. It draws us into a world overflowing with beauty and complexity. As photographers, we constantly seek to capture these fleeting moments. Embark on an exciting photography tour to photograph some of nature's most elusive yet stunning creatures: the common loon, northern flicker, bluebirds, and bald eagles. Each species present unique challenges and remarkable beauty, making this adventure a treasure chest of photographic opportunities.

The Enigmatic Common Loon

The common loon is a striking bird celebrated for its haunting calls that echo across the lakes. Its piercing red eyes and intricate patterns of black and white feathers make it a perfect subject for photography.

During our tour, we venture to a serene lake, where mist dances over the water. Silently gliding in our river boat, we photograph the common loon, effortlessly gliding across the water's surface.

Patience is vital when photographing loons. They are often secretive and dive at the slightest hint of disturbance unless you are with Hemmings Photo Tours where we have developed a trust with the loons on our lake and they don't mind being photographed. They make wonderful bird models.

The Vibrant Northern Flicker

Take a photo adventure with the vibrant northern flicker, a woodpecker with distinctive markings and an energetic personality. Known for their striking plumage and loud calls, flickers are often spotted in open woodlands and meadows.

We explore the edges of forests and fields, eager to capture their dynamic movements. The flicker, with its rapid wingbeats and unique "flickering" flight pattern, offered significant challenges and exciting opportunities for photographers.

To photograph a northern flicker effectively, it’s essential to understand their habitat. Observing them as they forage for ants or transition from tree to tree conveys not just their beauty but also their vital role in the ecosystem. Using a longer lens from a distance helped avoid startling them and led to great shots.

The Charming Bluebirds

Nothing signifies spring like the arrival of bluebirds. With their vivid blue feathers and cheerful demeanor, bluebirds add a splash of color to any landscape. For photographers, these birds embody joy and the promise of warmer days ahead.

Our tour takes us to meadows bursting with blooming wildflowers—the perfect backdrop for encountering bluebirds, often seen perched on fence posts or darting low over fields in search of insects.

The Majestic Bald Eagles

No photography tour is complete without honoring the majestic bald eagle. These iconic birds symbolize strength and freedom, making them a highly desired subject for wildlife photographers.

We are lucky to have nesting bald eagles at our lodge. We enjoy them all year round and get very excited when we notice new chicks in the nest. Every photographer should have at least one wonderful bald eagle photograph in their portfolio.

Techniques for Success

During our exploration for these stunning birds, several techniques enhanced our photography experience:

  • Patience and Stillness: Many birds are reactive. Remaining still and quiet helped us immerse ourselves in their world and anticipate their actions.

  • Understanding Behavior: Familiarizing ourselves with each species' habits revealed opportunities for great photography. Knowing when they would be most active significantly boosted our chances of capturing stunning images.

Both techniques highlight the importance of respect for wildlife and emphasize the value of preparation and knowledge in photography.

Participating in a Hemmings photography tour dedicated to capturing the common loon, northern flicker, bluebirds, and bald eagles transcends simply taking pictures.
